Description
Mycotoxins are naturally occurring toxic metabolites produced by fungi. These fungi grow on raw materials
(plants, grains) in the field or during storage of raw materials and feed. Mycotoxin production is mainly
related to climatic conditions such as temperature and humidity. Mycotoxins are very stable and resistant to
different storage and processing conditions. Horses and ponies can be exposed to mycotoxins in pasture, as well as in mouldy forage and hard feed.
Problems commonly associated with mycotoxicosis are:
- Reduced growth rates
- Decreased appetite
- Poor performance
- Colic
- Respiratory problems
- Hypersensitivity
- Reproductive and fertility problems
- Increased susceptibility to disease
- Brain lesions
- Neurological disorders
- Organ damage – especially liver, kidneys
